AIA (SL) — Founder & Principal Architect
Founder and Principal Architect, specialising in Ecologically Sustainable Design.
Dr. Arosha Gamage is the founder and principal architect of Design Studio, a chartered architect, and an award-winning design educator specialising in Ecologically Sustainable Design (ESD). Melding rigorous academic research with over two decades of international practice, her expertise spans biomimicry, biophilia, bioclimatic principles, and water-sensitive urban design (WSUD).
She holds a PhD from the University of Sydney, where she developed a pioneering biomimicry framework for space optimisation and eco-design idea generation — an accomplishment that earned her a Certificate of Achievement from Architectural Science Review and an ANZAScA Award nomination.
Highly decorated from her foundational years at the University of Moratuwa, she swept top honours including the Justin Samarasekera, Geoffrey Bawa, and SLIA Best Overall Student awards. Her academic career includes serving as Senior Lecturer at the University of Moratuwa (1999–2014), where she pioneered the 'Nature Studies Analysis' module, alongside teaching and examining roles at USYD, UNSW, and UWS.
Her portfolio ranges from high-end residential and mixed-use commercial projects to the prestigious SAARC Cultural Centre. A respected voice in global sustainability, she serves as a peer reviewer for Springer and major architectural journals.
